We’re absolutely thrilled to share the news that Castle Gardens has been announced as the national winner of the Garden Centre Association’s annual Christmas competition. Up against garden centres from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, including big names in the industry, Castle Gardens has now received this coveted accolade for the ninth time in 10 years. Brimsmore Gardens also came fourth in the country and second in the Wales and West regional category.

This is another huge achievement for The Gardens Group as a whole, as our Christmas displays demonstrate a real team effort across all three sites. Everyone works tirelessly to make sure the displays look their absolute best, from the opening in October right up until Christmas, so this recognition means a lot. We’re absolutely delighted to win this national award for the ninth time and this consistency reflects the commitment and creativity of our team, who make the transformation happen from scratch each and every year

Our award-winning Christmas displays are open seven days a week until Christmas.

Poundbury Gardens 2018 (34)

The first delivery of Christmas trees will be arriving at our garden centres next week, and as ever we’ll have a large selection to choose from including Norway Spruce, Nordmann and Frasier Fir. If you like to put your tree up close to the main event then we will be getting regular fresh deliveries of traditional, luxurious and highly scented varieties right up until Christmas Eve.

When you’re done with your Christmas tree, we will collect the ones bought from us and recycle them for mulching, composting and other environmental projects designed to limit erosion and protect wildlife.

War Gardens

Picture caption: Images from War Gardens by Lalage Snow.

Photojournalist and war reporter, Lalage Snow, will be sharing the award-winning photography from her latest book, War Gardens, at Castle Gardens on Thursday 6 December. A culmination of seven years’ work while living in Kabul and travelling around Asia and the Middle East, these images, which have been exhibited at The Garden Museum in London and the Sydney Opera House, show the gardens that people have created in the pursuit of calm, when living alongside conflict and life’s continuing pressures.

Taking place in The Butterfly House from 7:30pm, this special evening promises to take the audience on a journey through this century’s conflicts in places such as Afghanistan, Ukraine and the West Bank and the gardens found within these war-torn countries, examining war through the personal stories of those living through it.

Tickets cost £5 per person, which includes refreshments in The Walled Garden Restaurant. Advanced booking is essential and tickets can be purchased from Winstone’s Books on Cheap Street, Sherborne and Castle Gardens on New Road in Sherborne.

Armistice Day

Castle Gardens 2018 (57)

To mark the centenary of the end of World War I and pay tribute to the men listed on the Sherborne Castle Roll of Honour, we will be holding a two-minute silence next to our commemorative display of poppies at Castle Gardens on Sunday.

With Castle Gardens standing on what was once the kitchen garden of the Sherborne Castle Estate, it feels like a fitting place to honour the memory of the men that left home to fight, including William Meteyard, a gardener at Sherborne Castle, who sadly did not return from the war.

Organised by a member of William Meteyard’s family and the Castle Gardens team, the memorial will be displayed in the garden centre from Friday 19 October to Friday 30 November and a two-minute silence will be held on Armistice Day.
