If you haven’t already, there is just enough time to enter your garden for the 2012 Somerset and Dorset Wildlife Friendly Gardening Competition that The Gardens Group is proud to be sponsoring. The closing date for entries is 18th May 2012 and judging of the short-listed gardens will take place in June.

Whether your garden is small, medium sized, large with a meadow or orchard or shared in the community, there is a category for you. The Dorset and Somerset Wildlife Trusts will judge your garden on how wildlife friendly it is and the winners will be presented with a plaque at an Awards Ceremony at Castle Garden in Sherborne on Thursday 19th July 2012. The runners up will also receive prizes and what’s more we will be rewarding every school that enters this competition.

So what are you waiting for? If your garden is a wildlife haven you can enter the competition by visiting DWTonline or SWTonline, visit Castle or Brimsmore Gardens to collect an entry form or download here.

There’s nothing like a group of young people getting together in the garden to liven things up!  Their sheer enthusiasm and ability to learn quickly is so refreshing and we’ve decided to capture this with a new club Brimsmore Young Gardeners!

Every week there will be a new topic including; planting seeds, helping the environment, potato growing, competitions and more…you never know, if you come along, you may be able to teach the oldies a thing or two! Look out for further information in Brimsmore Gardens and download the essential after care forms from our website. So far, we’re running the following projects.

19 April to 2 May – Potatoes – more than chips! See who can grow the most – bring your bags back in July and you might win a prize

3 May to 16 May – Sweetpeas – how to plant a sweetpea, and then it’s your job to nurture and care for it at home

17 May – 30 May Pumpkin planting competition – harvest in August and a prize at Halloween for the best carved pumpkin

31 May to 13 June Sunflower competition – prizes for the tallest, sunniest sunflower face and most seeds!

On Saturday, Castle Gardens celebrated 25 years since it first opened its doors to customers.

Thank you to all our loyal friends, colleagues, business partners and staff for your support and for joining us for Champagne and cake. And a special thank you to Canon Eric Woods for his kind words and for cutting the cake, and to all the people who have supported us over the years. We look forward to sharing the next 25 years with you.

All week we’ve been celebrating 25 years since Castle Gardens opened its doors, with everything from 1987 prices, free breakfasts and cream teas, 4,000 special anniversary violas – and even had a flash mob in amongst the displays. But we’re not stopping there: on Good Friday we will be handing out a special birthday present to all our customers and will be officially cutting the cake on Saturday morning from 10am, with a glass of bubbly, friends, customers and colleagues. What more could we ask for?

Happy Easter
