Last weekend showed that just a little bit of sunshine goes a long way. Friday night was quiz night and our restaurant was packed full of people battling it out to win first place in our general knowledge quiz. Whilst the evening was fun, its aim was to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and it did just that with a whopping £900 being raised for the charity – thank you to everyone who came along and gave so generously. Saturday then welcomed the first of our Wildlife Weekends; Dorset Wildlife Trust was with us giving advice and there was a demo from Dry Stone wall experts AF landscapes – their fabulous creations are still in the garden centre so do pop in if you need a bit of inspiration.

On Sunday we welcomed Sherborne Town Band to our marquee and they played beautifully whilst guests enjoyed cream teas in the sunshine; and on Monday over 120 people turned up to listen to the beautiful sound of opera singer Teresa De-Roberta and to listen to a talk from Sara Jones. Next stop is Henry V by Illyria in the Walled Garden this evening and tomorrow, Toby Buckland will be speaking in our marquee – tickets are still available in advance or on the door so don’t miss out.

Here are a few pics from the weekend!

ast night was one of the wettest evenings I can remember, certainly for July when the sun should be shining brightly. Despite this, residents from Sherborne and the surrounding area turned up in their hundreds to show support for acclaimed author, Joanne Harris, who spoke to the crowds about her new book, Peaches for Monsieur Le Curé. During the day the team built a marquee in our walled garden which, when joined to the Butterfly House, set the stage for the evening and with some wonderful plants and a little mood lighting looked beautiful even on a wet, grey evening. Thank you to Sherborne Literary Society for inviting Joanne Harris to the event and to all the staff for their support.

The marquee will be staying in position for a couple of weeks as it will be the setting for our programme of summer events. Tonight, Friday 13th , is Quiz Night and we’re encouraging groups of friends and families to take on the quiz master in order to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, then on Sunday we’re welcoming Sherborne Town Band to our walled garden for an afternoon of cream teas and relaxed atmosphere. On Monday, Teresa De Roberto will be singing for Friends of The Yeatman Hospital; then Sara Jones, widow of Col. ‘H’ Jones, will talk about her involvement with The Falklands’ Families’ Association, the Royal British Legion Poppy Factory and the Falkland Island Memorial Chapel. On Thursday the Marquee will be filled with wildlife enthusiasts who will hear from TV broadcaster, author and lifelong gardener Toby Buckland. To attend any of the events please ask a member of staff or call 01935 814633.

This week we’ve been busy planting up our autumn Chrysanthemums which I must say are looking beautiful. We’ve had over 3,500 to plant in total, so we thought it was a good opportunity to get the whole team involved. It has been a real team effort to get everything planted in time, ready to be distributed to all three garden centres.

Members of our till team priced up each pot and even washed some old ones so they could be reused. Staff members from the shrub and furniture department also got their hands dirty helping to pot each one up on our potting bench at the back of Castle Gardens. The variety we’ve used is called ‘Garden Mum’ and will deliver wonderful shades of pink, yellow, orange, cream and red when in full bloom.

Now we’re in July and the sun has (at last) decided to shine so we’ve been gearing up for more summer events. Coming up we’re hosting a visit from best-selling Author Joanne Harris (famous for her novel ‘Chocolat’) who will be talking about her new book ‘Peaches for Monsieur le Curé’ at The Butterfly House on Thursday 12th July at 7pm. You’ll find more information about tickets (which include Bellini Cocktails and Canapés!) at http://www.sherborneliterarysociety.com.

Lucky for some, our Charity Quiz Night takes place on Friday 13th – it’s for a really worthwhile cause so make sure you pop in, pick up a ticket or put your name down to enjoy a fun evening where everyone is welcome!

And finally, the first of our Wildlife Weeks starts at Castle Gardens on Saturday 14th July – the themed week includes a talk from the inspiring TV Gardener Toby Buckland on Thursday 19th, so make sure you don’t miss the chance to meet him!
