Is your garden bursting with bee and butterfly-friendly flowers, do you have a small pond where toads, newts and frogs can frolic? If you think your garden is a welcoming and friendly place for wildlife then you can now enter it into the Wildlife Friendly Gardening awards organised by the Dorset Wildlife Trust and The Gardens Group. It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, and not even how tidy, what the judges are interested in is whether it attracts wildlife.

You can pick up entry forms and guidance notes from our garden centres, online www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlifegardening, or contact Joy Wallis on 01305 264620, email jwallis@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk. The closing date for entries is Monday 19 May 2014 and the awards ceremony will be held at Castle Gardens in July.

Good luck!

At Castle Gardens in Sherborne, we’ve been able to expand our range for spring, thanks to the completion of new paving under our glass canopy. The area, which used to be open to the elements, is now a real sun trap for gardeners to wander and enjoy our new spring stock of plants, shurbs and garden furniture. What’s more, thanks to this growth all three of the garden centres will open from 10am – 4:30pm every Sunday. Our tills will open at 10:30am giving shoppers an extra half an hour to browse.

On Wednesday evening The Apple Tree Restaurant at Brimsmore Gardens was a hive of foodie activity with many of our local food producers and small businesses attending our networking event. The free event got off to a great start, everyone got stuck in to the tasters from The Apple Tree restaurant kitchen, while sharing tips advice and even samples of their own products. We were lucky enough to have three experts along to share up-to-date industry information. Jay Capel from Trading Standards Devon & Somerset County Council updated everyone on labelling laws, Paula Deacon from G-Free talked about the gluten free market and Andy from Porcupine PR gave an up to the minute account of social media for small brands.

It was a fantastic event, the food was delicious and we were thrilled with all the positive comments we had. Here’s to the next one!

We are delighted to announce that Animals in Education, a family-run petting farm in Dorset, will be bringing George, the Dutch; Mr T, the Lion Lop; Jubilee, the Rex Cross, and Marzipan, the Netherland Dwarf rabbit along to all three of our garden centres during the school Easter holidays. There will be plenty of opportunities to hold the rabbits and learn about keeping them as pets. Other activities will include designing an Easter egg competition, making bunny ear headbands and an Easter rabbit hunt.
