It’s all about wildlife in our Garden Centres this year and next weekend is no different. On Saturday and Sunday (7 – 8 September) we will have live birds of prey at Castle Gardens from Sharandys Birds of Prey in Langport, they’ll then be at Brimsmore Gardens on 14th and 15th and finally Poundbury on 21st and 22nd September.

Visit our garden centre and get up close and personal with the birds. For more information visit www.sharandysbirdsofprey.com

Tomorrow The Engine Room restaurant at Poundbury will be transformed into a music venue as we welcome Bare Bones, an acoustic trio from Bridgewater. The first one-hour set will get going at 7:30pm and will include a variety of classic and modern cover tracks. Tickets for this event can be purchased from The Engine Room restaurant and are £17 per person, which includes a buffet and a glass of Pimms, which should set you up nicely for a good boogie.

Today children, along with their parents and grandparents flocked to all three of our three garden centres for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, and mad it was too! At Castle Gardens, the staff dressed up, we had, Alice and The Mad Hatter, of course, as well as The Queen of Hearts, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and The White Rabbit. Under the canopy we had a long table, decorated with colourful table cloths, tea pots of all shapes and sizes, flower windmills and a bubble machine. The children decorated top-hats and cup-cakes while and Fran read the story of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

Here are some pictures of the competition winners and more…

There have been celebrations and smiles all round this week at The Gardens Group, since we heard the news that The Apple Tree Farm Shop won Gold in the Farm Shop category of the Taste of the West Hospitality & Retail Awards 2013. We came up against some stiff competition in the awards, and Cath and her team shone through with their commitment to local sourcing, in fact they tweeted ‘local sourcing at its best,’ and described our farm shop as a ‘real gem’. The team at The Apple Tree take real pride in stocking local and seasonal produce from close-by producers and suppliers, and to have it recognised and receive such a well respected accolade is just brilliant. The certificate will be displayed with pride in the farm shop – and, we may just enter again next year.

Earlier in the year we donated some compost to St Mary’s Primary School in Bradford Abbas so that the pupils could grow some vegetables. We were delighted to receive these pictures of their crops in full swing, and to see that everyone is getting involved with the watering and weeding. We really hope that the teachers and children all got to eat some of their produce before they went away for the summer.
