Archive for January, 2014

ImageHalf term will be here before we know it and if you’re looking for a hoot, we’ve got just the thing. From barn and tawny to long-eared and little, The RSPB and Sharandys Birds of Prey, will be bringing a variety of owls to each of our garden centres during the February half term. This free event will run from 10am – 4pm, and gardeners of all ages will get the chance to meet the round-faced birds of prey, finding out about their mostly nocturnal lives, how they feed and their importance to our countryside. What’s more, there will be lots of activities including making an owl out of a pine cone, owl masks and listen to wise tales at story time.

seed potatoes

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get out in the garden more often and grow some fruit and veg, then we have a few tips on getting your garden ready. This time of year is a great time to plant fruit trees and bushes, shallots, onion sets and seed potatoes. So to get your soil in tip-top condition, dig over last year’s vegetable plot and mix in compost as you go. If you want to grow beans, then filling trenches with kitchen waste is a great way to help them along. For rhubarb shoots, it’s time to cover them with forcing jars for an early harvest, and get some cloches or horticultural fleece to cover any other early sowings to keep the soil nice and warm.

It’s been a rather bleak start to the year, but to help you battle on through January (or should we say wade through!), we’ve got lots of lovely offers at all three of our garden centres that will no doubt cheer you up – and be easy on the bank balance too. Next time you’re in one of our garden centres, make sure you pick up one of our January leaflets, which are displayed at the tills, and you can escape the cold, damp and dreary days with two for one on all hot drinks. What’s more, you’ll be able to get planting ready for the year ahead with 10% off all seeds and seed potatoes.
