The results for the Garden Centre Association’s Christmas Competition are in and I’m delighted to report that all three of our centres have been recognised in the Garden Centre Category for their regions. We were up against some stiff competition as always, but our imaginative and innovative displays caught the judges’ eye.

In the South Thames region, Castle Gardens won first place, with Poundbury Gardens coming third, while Brimsmore Gardens came first in the Wales and West region.

Our displays are a huge team effort across all three centres and everyone here works tirelessly to get them ready in October and looking spectacular right up until Christmas.

Both Brimsmore and Castle will now be judged for the national Christmas Competition, with the results announced in early December.

Wish them luck!

Last Tuesday The Apple Tree Restaurant was commended in the cafes, coffee shops and tea shops category at the national FreeFrom Eating Out Awards, which aims to encourage innovation in the freefrom food service industry and celebrate those giving a clear offering to people with food allergies. We were up against some stiff competition and are delighted to have our efforts recognised on a national stage.

Last Wednesday we teamed up with Winstone’s Bookshop to host a talk and book signing at Castle Gardens with Gardeners’ World presenter, Carol Klein. Despite the blustery wind and rain, the Butterfly House was fit to bursting and Carol gave a very amusing overview of her new book, Making a Garden, which is on sale now at Winstone’s Bookshop in Sherborne.

An evening with Alan Titchmarsh.jpg

On Thursday we headed to The Crown Hotel in Blandford for An Evening with Alan Titchmarsh in aid of Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) The Soldiers’ Charity. With gardening-themed hymn parodies, potted poetry and amusing anecdotes, the much celebrated gardener, broadcaster and novelist had the audience enthralled. We were delighted to sponsor this event and help raise £3,000 for the charity, which has been supporting serving soldiers, veterans and their families since 1944.

Brimsmore Gardens has been announced as the winner of the Garden Centre Category in the Wales and West Garden Centre Association 2015 Christmas Competition. Up against some stiff competition in the region, the Christmas displays at Brimsmore were commended for the sense of the theatre throughout and the ambience, which judges described as building as you move further around the displays.

The Christmas displays are a huge team effort and everyone pulls together to build them and keep them looking spectacular for our customers from October right up until Christmas. It is a fantastic achievement to have the team’s efforts recognised and take the winning position for the region.

FFEOA 15 shortlisted 200x200

We’ve always been proud of our allergen awareness in The Apple Tree Restaurant, with our daily changing menu clearly labelled at all times and the team well equipped to advise. These efforts have been recognised by the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards, which aims to encourage food businesses to develop this area and have a clear offering for people with food allergies. We are among all sorts of great food outlets to be shortlisted, including conference centres, community cafes and producers making gluten free beer, rolls and chips and dairy free pesto. The winners will be announced by Antony Worrall Thompson on Tuesday 17 November at Food Matters Live in London.
