Damers Garden planting

Our very own Cultivation Street Ambassador, Lisa Bond has been sharing her gardening knowledge with the pupils and teachers at Damers First School in Poundbury to create a wildlife friendly school garden, which also supplies fresh produce for the school’s food technology classes. Earlier this month it was announced that Damers First School had been awarded second place in the School Garden category at this year’s Cultivation Street Competition, receiving £1,500 and 100 Calliope geraniums from the scheme, which recognises community garden projects across the UK.

Created by the pupils, teachers and volunteers from the local community, who used seed, plant and compost donations from Poundbury Gardens, the garden was created in one year and features a wildflower meadow, wildlife hideouts and a greenhouse made out of recycled plastic bottles. Gardening is a very rewarding activity, both for the environment and our own wellbeing, and gaining recognition from such high profile judges, such as celebrity gardener, David Domoney, Jeryl Stone, Chair of the WI, and Simon Sadinsky from The Prince’s Foundation, gives us a great opportunity to help spread the word and inspire as many people as possible to get growing, whether at home or in shared community spaces.

Autumn gardening

With the soil still warm and moist, autumn is the perfect and traditional time for planting, giving plants an opportunity to establish before winter. From ornamental and fruit trees and large specimen plants to bedding plants and spring flowering bulbs, we’ve got a huge selection in store right now to keep colour and interest right the way through those darker months.

It is also a good idea to give your lawn a little love before the cold weather sets in, and we recommend the following steps, so you can reap the rewards come spring:
– Feed and moss kill
– Rake up and discard of any debris
– Top dress and over sow with grass seed
