Beat those January blues

It’s been a rather bleak start to the year, but to help you battle on through January (or should we say wade through!), we’ve got lots of lovely offers at all three of our garden centres that will no doubt cheer you up – and be easy on the bank balance too. Next time you’re in one of our garden centres, make sure you pick up one of our January leaflets, which are displayed at the tills, and you can escape the cold, damp and dreary days with two for one on all hot drinks. What’s more, you’ll be able to get planting ready for the year ahead with 10% off all seeds and seed potatoes.

New Year offers

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying some well earned rest. We wanted to let you know that as of Friday 27 December, we will be selling our Christmas decorations at half price, so you will be able to get ahead of the game for next year.

If you are feeling a little daunted by the thought of a long and cold January, then don’t despair as we have got plenty to take your mind off the dull and gloomy days. From Monday 25 until Friday 31 January, there will be some great savings to be made with our huge store room clearance sale. What’s more you’ll be able to enjoy two for one on hot drinks in our three restaurants and 10% off seeds and seed potatoes to get your garden off to a good start in 2014.

We will be open on New Year’s Day from 10am – 5pm.

Happy New Year from all of us at The Gardens Group

On Sunday I was lucky enough to go to BBC Radio Solent’s studios in Southampton with Barry and Jamie from The Green Shed. We were invited by the producer of the radio station’s gardening show ‘The Good Life’ for a live interview to talk about The Green Shed, how the project came about, and what it offers and how gardening and recycling projects are good forms of therapy. You can listen again to the show with Georgie Windsor if you follow this link: The Good Life.

Talking of therapy, this week, now that all the Christmas displays are finished and open, Louise and I have been able to get back to gardening, or rather giving gardening advice. This week it’s been on everything from how to deal with overwintering geraniums, to writing an article for The County Magazine on the alternatives to a Christmas tree – yes such a thing does exist and is very popular!!

Other news this week is that The Orangery (a beautiful oak extension to the existing Engine Room Restaurant) at Poundbury Gardens is almost ready. The team is giving it a few finishing touches ready for the launch next week. Everyone is invited to celebrate the opening; there will be a free drink for everyone, canapés, and even a free prize draw all weekend where you can enter to win some great prizes including £100 worth of Christmas decorations, £50 worth of plants, a luxury food hamper and much more. We’ll be celebrating from 5.30pm – 8.00pm and look forward to welcoming you.

Santa’s Little Helper

If you popped into Castle Gardens over the festive season you may well have entered our Christmas Poster Design Competition. Well, we had a great response from lots of budding artists in the area who got busy with felt tips and pencils whilst they waited to visit Father Christmas, it was tough, but we’ve selected a winner and congratulations must go to Emilie Bonay aged 8 who won first prize for her poster design which included Father Christmas and one of his reindeers.

The winning design will be used around the centre next year – first stop Castle Gardens…next stop the Tate!

Here are a few snaps of Emilie along with her sister when they came into the centre this week to collect their prize which was of course a Christmas stocking full of presents!

Looking back

Well the time has nearly come to hang up our spades, and there’s just time to wrap a few last presents and hang the last bauble before we have to start wrapping our pigs in blankets and basting the turkey.

It’s been a busy but fantastic year – we’ve seen the sales of bird food soar at all three centres; we’ve helped develop a Millennium garden in Charlton Horethorne and have given the Templecombe station volunteers a helping hand on the way to entering the national Best Railway Station Awards; we’ve had a Birthday at Poundbury and at The Green Shed and celebrated Bees at Castle Gardens. We’ve had our second Wildlife Friendly Gardening competition and won the national Christmas Display competition for the third year – phew!

So here’s to a successful 2012 – come back and see us soon as we have some great offers in January look out for our news as celebrations are being planned for some very special Gardens Group Birthdays in 2012.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Mike and the whole team at The Gardens Group
